An individual’s personality is a combination of traits and patterns that affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. We all are different and unique beings because of our different personality traits. Not surprisingly enough, our brain and genes influence our personality the most. Our personality traits are the stable beliefs that motivate our actions.
However our personality is affected by various factors. Starting right from our culture to our ethnicity and gender. Different cultures define different guidelines for what the personality of people with different genders should be like.
For example, in India a girl is supposed to be “ soft, sweet and feminine” instead of an outspoken, confidant person. On the other hand, boys are supposed to be “ strong and brave” instead of being shy and emotional. These rules are fed inside us since our childhood and we grow up to follow them. Our cognitive base is laid. These rules then turn into a part of our personality. A lot of us even get corrected when we behave against the ‘right’ rules laid for our particular gender. These are the small little ways in which gender norms shape our personality.
The other factors that affect our personality are family background, social environment, friends, physical structure, nervous system etc.
We all are different beings with different personalities living in the same ecosystem doing our work. No 2 people can be the same and it is high time we all understand that.
“Appearances make impressions but it is the personality that makes the impact.”
